Peeta was surprised to see him, and neither of them said anything until the peacekeepers came to collect Gale, when he opened his mouth as if to speak - but no words came out. Finally understanding, Peeta looked into his eyes and said "I'm going to fight, you know. To keep her safe." Gale simply looked at him in confusion, then thanked him. Several days later when the interviews were aired, Gale was the only person in District 12 who was not shocked by Peeta's confession.
